Keep Your Bottles Looking Newer Longer

Abstract
Returnable glass bottles must be washed to ensure product quality and to provide a clean, appealing package. Sodium hydroxide based solutions are used for washing because of their efficacy in cleaning and for their ability to effect commercial sterility under specified conditions. However, sodium hydroxide attacks and dissolves glass by a process known as etching, which results in a loss of clarity and degrades applied ceramic labels. This chemical attack combined with the physical abrasion of bottles that occurs during production and handling, leads to visible white wear rings called scuff bands. Scuffing reduces packaging appeal and is a cause for bottle rejection and loss. This work illustrates the scuffing reduction achievable through proper detergent selection to inhibit caustic attack on glass in the bottlewasher.

Sintesis
Las botellas retornables tienen que ser lavadas para asegurar la calidad del producto y para dar un embalaje limpio y flamativo. Soluciones con base en hidroxido de sodic, son utilizadas para lavar por su eficacia en limpiar y su habilidad en lograr esterilizacion comercial bajo condiciones especificas. Sinembargo, el hidroxido de sodio ataca y disuelve el vidrio por un proceso conocido de desgaste, lo cual resulta en una perdida de claridad asi como degrada emblemas de ceramica aplicados. Este ataque quimico combinado con la abrasion fisica de las botellas que ocurre durante la produccion y manejo, Ileva a tener los anillos visibles blancos Ilamados bandas de desgaste. Este desgaste reduce la apariencia del empaque y es una causa de rechazo y perdida de botellas. Este trabajo ilustra la reduccion de desgaste que se puede lograr por medio de ]a seleccion apropiada de detergente para inhibir el ataque caustico al vidro en la lavadora de botellas.
